Introduction

It was a regular day after vacation. Morning shower, coffee, local news, and TV Shop from the kitchen’s TV set looked like the ordinary beginning of the day. Nothing was supposed to happen and make Karen’s day so complicated. However, the car broke down. The quintessence of technologies of the 90s got out of order without notice. It had no idea of how inconvenient it could be when the services of the car were needed. Karen stood still thinking about her course of action. There were only two options. The first one was to hire a taxi while the second way out was to ask a colleague to give her a lift. She dialed the number of the supervisor and described the problem. Karen expressed the depth of her despair and apologized for such a situation. A thought crossed her mind that she would be lucky to get to the job by the evening in order to complete at least some of the tasks. The woman tried to think positively and hoped that customers would not put knife in her back in any form they were able to. At that time, she did not know that she was very close to the unfortunate day events.

Conflict

Karen was not at work for many weeks, and, unfortunately, the woman returned to work three days later than she had to. Nothing was supposed to happen and make Karen’s night so complicated. However, her car broke down. The quintessence of technologies of the 90s got out of order without notice. It had no idea of how inconvenient it could be especially when the services of the car were needed. Karen stood still thinking about her course of action. There were two options of dealing with the problem; the woman could either hire a taxi or ask a colleague for help. She dialed the number of the supervisor and described the situation expressing the depth of her despair and apologizing. A thought crossed her mind that she would be lucky to get to the office by morning in order to complete at least some of the tasks. She tried to think positively and hoped that customers would not put knife in her back in any form they were able to. At that moment, she was not aware that she was very close to the unfortunate day events.

Character

The customer who complained was a female. She was tall and had short hair. She seemed friendly and was also very pretty. As a rule, she did not complain much. She was always on vacation and drove a beautiful new white Chevy Blazer. She lived in a very beautiful and big condominium that looked really up-to-date. When Karen came back to work, the client started a fight, but she did not win it.

Setting

It was a regular day after the customer’s vacation. One of my responsibilities was to deliver the papers in a medium-sized town with many trees. On my way, I usually listened to the radio that had great workout music. In the summertime, I could hear the birds singing and flying from tree to tree. Some of the trails went right through the condominiums that were quite nice. At the weekends, I sometimes watched the amazing sunrise. Working in the cold is another story. During wintertime, my job became quite nasty. It was because of the snow. It usually snows a lot in my town, and I have to stumble through it wearing snowshoes to get from home to home. However, I am really dedicated to my job. Although it can pose many challenges, I love being outdoors and serving the community.

Points of View

Choose a scene and the two characters to work with. The scene you choose could be the one you have already written about or the one that you intended, but have not written about. In either case, this exercise will help you make the decision about the best ‘point of view’ for the story:

I choose partnership as the relationship between the two characters. It includes improvising in pairs and is an excellent ground for training to improve listening, conflict management and co-operation skills and to practice character. There was only one way that the scene would work, and it was the partners working together. Therefore, the key point is that two person improvisations are used to avoid making yourself look noisy, going to laugh and putting yourself in the center of attention since it often ends up looking and feeling fake. Additionally, it can hurt the partner’s feelings. Moreover, it is selfish. However, I must say, it is not a good idea to block your partner and make him/her look stupid. I know a person who likes doing it just to impress others. One of the first rules of improvisation is to agree on what a partner utters and add points to it. Improvisation relies on giving. You have to work in order to create the best scene for your partner. It is vital that your partner does the same for you. If you try to make a scene work for a partner, it means that you are collaborating, listening and accepting that are important skills while improvising.

Theme & Ending

Karen opened the door and spent five minutes just standing in the corridor. It was difficult to realize that people could be two-faced and hypocrite. The situation resolved well, but Karen sighed as her nerves were frazzled for nothing in this battle with the client. It was unthinkable to imagine a situation when one of her customers could have found the background for such accusations. She was tired. It had been a difficult and long week. When Karen went into her bedroom, she shut the shades and crawled into her nice and warm bed. Her working day was over, and it was time for dreaming. Karen closed her eyes and thought of many other adventures that lay ahead.
