Free «Gun Ownership Should be Tightly Controlled» Essay Sample

In the contemporary society, gun crime is a significant issue. Each single day, innocent people, both adults and children, are being shot to death with the gun. Gun crime can be divided into intentional and accidental crime depending on whether it was committed on purpose or by accident. Even though the gun was created to protect people’s lives, it causes people’s death. Thus, the only option to reduce the level of gun crime is to tightly control gun ownership.

The severity of gun ownership control depends on the laws of each specific country. Developed countries have less gun crimes than the countries, whose level of development is lower (Carter, 2006, p. 27). It is so because these countries have strict laws towards gun ownership. For example, in Great Britain, the rate of crime committed with the help of a gun is extremely low due to the strict control of gun ownership. However, the USA is a developed country, where it is quite easy to get a gun; thus, in the USA, the rate of gun crime is higher than in other developed countries such as Great Britain (Magoon, 2010, p. 49). When gun ownership is tightly controlled, it helps to omit many potential gun crimes and significantly reduce gun crime rate in the country. In addition, the general rate of crime in the country is reduced with the reduction of the crime committed with a gun (Lott, 2013, p. 41). For example, in the states where gun ownership is strictly controlled by the laws, the rate of general crime and crime committed with gun is the lowest in the USA according to the data gathered by the Center of American Progress.

Despite the fact that the gun was invented to protect people from other people, it is a deadly weapon. It was constructed to kill. Thus, all types of guns are extremely dangerous, and their ownership must be severely controlled by the special law (Carter, 2006, p. 38). It is so, because if a person can have a gun, he/she will not be able to shoot anyone. It means that the more people have access to guns, the more gun crime they will be able to commit. People should be able to own a gun for their own protection. However, due to the fact that gun is a deadly weapon, the strict laws, which will clearly state what people can and cannot own a gun, should tightly control gun ownership. In order, to receive a permission to possess a gun, everyone must go through testing of the personality and special training to learn how and where it is allowed to use a gun (Lott, 2013, p. 38). In addition, the gun ownership must be strictly limited by the specific age limit. Thus, if the person has not reached a certain age, he/she will not receive a permit to own a gun. The age limit is extremely important, because the gun owner must completely understand the responsibility for having access to a deadly weapon.

Gun control is such a complicated issue nowadays, because many people say that a gun itself is not dangerous; it is the owner of the gun, who can be dangerous (Doyle, 2005, p. 78). It is so, because there are many people who have guns, but who have never killed anyone and never will. Nevertheless, gun ownership should be tightly controlled, because the easier it is to get a gun, the more chances there are that a mentally unhealthy person, who cannot control himself/herself properly, can get a gun and kill someone without even realizing it (Carter, 2006, p. 67). It is true that if someone wants to harm somebody else, he will find a way to do it with or without a gun. However, the stricter laws will control gun ownership, the less gun crime and accidental shooting there will be.

To conclude, strict laws should tightly control gun ownership because the easier it is to get a gun, the higher the rate of gun crime will be. The readers should understand that having a gun is a huge responsibility, because it is a deadly weapon. Thus, if there is a person among the readers, who wants to possess a gun, then this person should go through all the official procedures in order to receive a permit to own a weapon. In addition, the readers should clearly state their position that gun ownership should be strictly controlled to the government.
